Interviews with veterinarians from all over the world – today: Brazil
Mrs. Andreia Martins Favarin ist a veterinary colleague, working for the city government of Lins, which is a town in São Paulo state, providing support for small dairy farms. Mrs. Favarin is working in this position since February 2014.
Dear Mrs. Favarin, what were the reasons for you to start working in your specific veterinary field?
Answer Mrs. Favarin: When I was studying I used to work as an intern in the large animals area, then the passion had started. When I have been in the U.S. to work in a dairy farm for 6 months I was assured about it.
How is it to work as a veterinarian in your country? Are veterinarians confronted with special tasks?
Answer Mrs. Favarin: In Brazil, veterinarians are not very respected, a lot of people think that we have to work for free because of the love for animals. But this kind of thought is slowly changing and I hope, in the future, Brazil will have the same respect for the vets that they have for the human doctors.
Please let us know how a typical day at work looks like for you.
Answer Mrs. Favarin: In my day at work, a lot of day starts in the middle of the night because I go to the small farms and proceed the CMT while they are milking the cows. After that I talk with the farmers and explain how the mastitis in their properties is and what they need to do to improve the herd health. Then, I ask if there is another problem, if there is something, I go and check, prescribe some medicine if is needed. My other function is in the Animal and Vegetable Food Inspection, where I have to analyze the producers and check if they are producing with quality and according to the inspection rules.
Would you choose the same job again if you could start all over again?
Answer Mrs. Favarin: I like my job, but I do not know if I would choose the same job because sometimes I feel that I will not have opportunities to grow as a veterinarian and will not be able to provide to the farmers all the support they could have because of the problems that is intrinsic to every government agency.
