In this roundtable discussion with Q&A, a panel of gastroenterologists and nutritionists to discuss the ongoing evolution of gastrointestinal case management, including the foundational role of nutrition and addressing dysbiosis. Specific topics that will be addressed include dietary modification as the first-line approach to diarrhea; the impact of macronutrient composition on the microbiome; appropriate diet selection for GI disease; the current evidence against the use of antibiotics for acute diarrhea or chronic enteropathy; and practical approaches to fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).
Program agenda
The participants will introduce case examples and proceed through the logical sequence of diagnostics and management/treatment recommendations, providing relevant discussion regarding the following:
- Applicable diagnostics (e.g., dysbiosis index), including prioritization of diagnostics when financial limitations are present
- The importance of dietary modification as the first-line approach, implementing and evaluating the efficacy of dietary trials, and guidance on selecting the appropriate diet for GI cases
- The use of antibiotics, including the mounting evidence against their use for diarrhea and enteropathy
Learning objectives
Following this roundtable presentation, attendees will have a greater understanding of:
- The logical and evidence-based sequence of diagnostics and management/treatment for GI disease in dogs and cats.
- The role of dysbiosis in the diagnosis and management of GI disease in dogs and cats.
- The physiology of and process for nutritional interventions (e.g., dietary trials, fiber supplementation) for canine and feline patients with GI disease.
- Why antibiotic administration should be avoided in most cases of diarrhea and what options can be offered to clients to prevent reliance on antibiotics when they are not indicated.
