In den diesjährigen Aufzeichnungen des **Microbiome Forum** beleuchten führende Expert:innen aus Mikrobiomforschung, Dermatologie, Verhaltensmedizin und Innerer Medizin den weitreichenden Einfluss des Darmmikrobioms auf die systemische Gesundheit. Die Vorträge schlagen die Brücke zwischen Forschung und klinischer Praxis und zeigen, wie Tierärzt:innen Mikrobiomwissen gezielt in die Patientenversorgung integrieren können.

Programmschwerpunkte

Im Fokus stehen die Achsen Darm–Gehirn und Darm–Haut sowie ihr Einfluss auf Gesundheit und Krankheit. Die Sessions liefern wissenschaftlich fundierte Strategien für die praktische Arbeit in der Verhaltensmedizin, Dermatologie und Gastroenterologie.

• Wie die Mikrobiota–Darm–Gehirn-Achse Verhalten und stimmungsbezogene Störungen bei Haustieren beeinflusst
• Zusammenhänge zwischen frühkindlichen Stressoren, Antibiotikaeinsatz und der langfristigen Darm- und Hautgesundheit
• Die Rolle der Darm–Haut-Achse bei atopischer Dermatitis des Hundes und ernährungsbasierte Ansätze zur Hautunterstützung
• Fallbeispiele und Evidenz zu glutenfreien, hydrolysierten Diäten bei paroxysmaler Dyskinesie des Hundes
• Aufklärung über Mythen und Fehlannahmen zu Prä-, Pro- und Postbiotika
• Praktische Empfehlungen zur Durchführung einer fäkalen Mikrobiota-Transplantation (FMT) in der Praxis

Nach der Teilnahme wirst du

1. Verstehen, wie das Darmmikrobiom über die Darm–Gehirn- und Darm–Haut-Achse die systemische Gesundheit beeinflusst.
2. Wissenschaftlich fundierte, mikrobiomorientierte und ernährungsbasierte Strategien in der täglichen Praxis anwenden.
3. Frühkindliche Einflussfaktoren erkennen, die langfristig Magen-Darm- und Hauterkrankungen prägen.
4. Situationen identifizieren, in denen diätetische Anpassungen oder Mikrobiomtherapien – einschließlich FMT – sinnvoll sind.
5. Zwischen evidenzbasiertem und nicht belegtem Einsatz von Biotika in der Veterinärmedizin unterscheiden.

Referent:innen

Prof. Dr. Jan S. Suchodolski

Jan S. Suchodolski graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria. After several years in small animal practice, he completed a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology at Texas A&M University, focusing on molecular markers to assess the intestinal microbiota. He is board-certified in immunology (ACVM) and currently serves as Professor and Associate Director of the GI Lab at Texas A&M. Dr. Suchodolski has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications in veterinary gastroenterology and microbiome research and holds the Purina PetCare Endowed Chair in Microbiome Research.

Dr. Jatin Nagpal

Jatin Nagpal earned his B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Delhi, followed by a M.Sc. in Neuroscience (Göttingen), a PhD in Optogenetics and C. elegans behaviour (Frankfurt), and postdoctoral research in Zebrafish stress neurobiology (Mainz). He is a Lecturer in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at University College Cork and Senior Scientist at APC Microbiome Ireland. His research focuses on the microbiota–gut–brain axis, stress and social neurobiology, and behavioural neuroscience.

Dr. Julia Albright

Julia Albright is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a master’s degree in Experimental Psychology and a DVM from the University of Tennessee, and completed her residency and fellowship in Animal Behavior at Cornell University. Her current research explores pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements to mitigate stress in companion animals.

Dr. Ulrika Ludvigsson

Ulrika Ludvigsson graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 2009 and is a Swedish Specialist in small animal diseases. Based at Evidensia Specialist Hospital Helsingborg, she focuses on gastroenterology and behaviour medicine. Her research investigates links between chronic enteropathy and emotional health in dogs as part of a collaborative GI/behaviour project with board-certified behaviourists Sarah Heath and Carrie Tooley.

Prof. Dr. Gualtiero Gandini

Gualtiero Gandini is Professor at the University of Bologna’s Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences. A Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology, he has served twice as President of ESVN/ECVN and of the Italian Society of Veterinary Neurology. His research covers canine and feline neurology, and he has been invited to over 30 international congresses. He is a member of the Purina Institute Advisory Panel and author of over 100 scientific publications.

Dr. Gabriel Vinderola

Gabriel Vinderola holds a PhD in Chemistry and is Principal Investigator at CONICET, Industrial Dairy Institute (INLAIN, Argentina). He teaches Microbiology at the National University of the Litoral and serves on the Board of ISAPP. His work centers on lactic acid bacteria, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and fermented foods. He has published more than 150 papers and is an active science communicator.

Prof. Dr. Stefan Unterer

Stefan Unterer is Professor and Director of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Clinic at the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich. A Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, his research includes the intestinal microbiome, acute hemorrhagic diarrhea, intestinal barrier function, and long-term effects of enteritis. He has held academic positions in Zurich and Munich and is active in several comparative gastroenterology societies.

Dr. Ana Rostaher

Ana Rostaher graduated from the University of Ljubljana and is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Dermatology. She has served as Senior Clinician and Lecturer at the University of Zurich and will soon join the University of Glasgow as Professor of Veterinary Dermatology. Her interests include atopic dermatitis, feline allergies, insect hypersensitivity, alopecia, and precision medicine.

Dr. Emanuela Kayser

Emanuela Kayser is Senior Nutritionist at Nestlé Purina, specializing in gut health. She holds a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a veterinary degree from the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil. Her research explores functional ingredients, immune modulation, gut microbiome, and nutrient digestibility in companion animals.

Dr. Francesco Lotti

Francesco Lotti graduated from the University of Pisa and completed postgraduate studies at Colorado State University, focusing on gastroesophageal reflux in dogs. A Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, he currently practices at Clinica Veterinaria Valdinievole in Italy. His main research areas include gastroenterology, hepatology, and pancreatic diseases.
